I really don’t even understand the purpose of the sidewalk grates. Why can’t it just be a regular sidewalk with a little drain or something? And no one seems to know what’s actually “down there.” I’m imagining alligators and underground albino creatures.
Plus, the grates don’t look too sturdy, and some of the holes look pretty deep. Every once in a while there are articles about people falling through the grates, and that’s just enough to scare the bejesus out of me. I picture myself falling 20 feet down. The relief I feel at surviving the fall is quickly shattered by the sight of the albinos who mistake me for one of their own and whisk me into their underground lair. The next thing I know I’m building fires in the sewer and wrestling alligators. What kind of a life is that? So instead I’m forced to look like an idiot tiptoeing around the grates pretending that it’s natural for someone to flatten themselves against the nearest building every 10 feet. But you can never be too safe.
