Fear of the Day: night-time pee-ers

The kids and I went to visit my parents in Kansas City this weekend, and we headed to bed around 11:30 last night. I was dreaming about my pregnant friend running over one of her 8th-grade students (typical dream for me) when I awoke to the creaking of a door about 4 a.m. Most people might assume someone who rightfully belonged in the house was moving about, but not me.
My first thought was a robber. I tried to stay quiet, but then thought it could be a kidnapper. So I jumped up and ran to the kids’ room. Both were sound asleep. I decided I might as well use the restroom myself. The previous user had not flushed, but I went ahead anyway. In the middle of my stream I realized I might be contaminating evidence. What if the intruder had used the restroom and not flushed to keep things quiet? And now I messed up our only chance to get his/her DNA! I would make a horrible detective. Fortunately upon exiting the restroom, I realized my brother had just returned from what was probably a drunken night out and the DNA testing would most likely not be required on this occasion. But I have learned my lesson. From now on, I will be taking samples from the toilet before using it. You can never be too safe.
