Fear of the Day: clouds

I’ve been spending a lot of times in airplanes lately, and you might think that seeing the top side of clouds would make me feel less anxious about what it is they are trying to hide. It’s bad enough on the ground, looking up and wondering what’s going on behind the clouds. I really do hope the sun is not hurtling toward us. Or a flock of birds is massing for attack. Or a catapulted pumpkin.

But there’s a finite amount of threats from above (unless you are afraid of stars, which I am, for this reason). In the air, when the ground is shrouded by the clouds, you have no idea What’s Going On Down There. It could be moving day at the airport, and the runway will be somewhere else. Tectonic plates could be shifting. It could actually be fog or even smoke — from my plane! Pumpkins could be traveling upward. That’s my point. You just don’t know. Stay on the ground, in the middle of the desert. You can never be too safe.
