Fear of the Day: smokes on a plane

Yeah, sure, I’m afraid of people lighting up a cigarette on a plane. They could fall asleep in the lavatory and catch the toilet paper on fire. And then what would the rest of us do when it was time to wipe up? It would be a big problem. Seriously, what I’m really afraid of is when the pilot gets on the intercom and announces we’ve been given priority landing clearance because they are unable to identify the source of the smoke. What?!
Then the guy behind me starts talking about how his flight last week lost its hydraulic power and required a special landing mat. I was like couldn’t you have mentioned this before we got on the plane so I would have known to avoid your bad karma? But now I was stuck on the death flight with the smell of an electrical fire and someone talking about all the bad things that could happen. It didn’t do much to soothe me when I glimpsed the fire engines, ambulances and other emergency equipment lining the runway on our approach. Upon landing, the plane had to remain on the runway while they inspected it. They finally gave us the green light, though guys in silver astronaut gear helped us off the plane when we arrived at the gate. I was fully expecting to be foamed as I exited. That would have at least made up for the whole anxiety of the thing. But they didn’t. Next time I’m bringing my own foam. You can never be too safe.
