I’m rereading New Moon, which is the second book of the Twilight series. I suppose I’m a little obsessed with it. Anyway, there’s a part in which the main character believes her friend has gotten sucked into a cult (though it turns out he’s just part of a werewolf pack). But this made me start thinking about the danger of cults.
I assume no one sets out to be in a cult. So how exactly does this happen? I am very concerned that I could unwillingly join a cult. And it seems like once you’re in there’s no getting out, until you drink the kool-aid. And I don’t like kool-aid.
Like what if I think I’m joining a book club (to read Twilight or something), but instead of discussing a book they brainwash me. I could start to believe I’m a werewolf. I’d stop shaving, plan my life around full moons and start sniffing everyone’s crotch. I don’t know what the final send-off would be, but I’m betting it has something to do with silver bullets.
I think I better stop reading and move onto a skydiving club or something. Nothing bad could happen there. You can never be too safe.
