Fear of the Day: packing

It always feels like I’m forgetting something every time I leave the house. It doesn’t seem to matter how much I plan. I will always get wherever I’m going and realize I’m missing something. I could go to the swimming pool and not bring a bathing suit, it’s that bad.
With all this holiday travel, I seem to be packing a bag every other day. I try to get the basics: clothes, toiletries, books, etc. But then there are things like shoes that tend to get left out. And those are kind of important. I had to borrow some running shoes that were two sizes too big last weekend. That makes the blisters two sizes bigger too.
But my biggest offense has been forgetting the presents for those whom we are visiting. Why can’t I remember that? I’m fearful that it might be because I don’t actually want to give them gifts. I don’t want to part with the body lotion, sweater or portable video game system that I purchased. What could I do in these situations?
I’m thinking I should just carry a bag of charcoal in the trunk of my car. That is the gift that keeps on giving. It says I care about your warmth, and yet I hate you and think this is what you deserve. You can never be too safe.
