Fear of the Day: resolutions

I don’t hate resolutions because I can’t stick with them–I hate them because other people can’t stick with them. Every new year, millions of lazy people decide to turn their lives around and “exercise” more. Typically this involves signing up at the gym. New year’s is actually the only way gyms stay in business.
These people are so convinced that they are turning their lives around that they commit to paying for the annual membership. And for the first few weeks of the year, they are living the dream. They show up at the gym looking all perky and smiley while they pump their iron and tread their mills. The parking lot is so packed that the regulars must park out on the street, knowing that this is only temporary.
In a few short weeks, these people will decide to skip a workout. That will turn into two workouts and, eventually, the rest of the year. But for all of January, this is the worst month of the year for the rest of us. Therefore, I am resolving to skip this month at the gym. I figure a few extra pounds, regardless of how long it takes to work off, is worth it to avoid the few extra steps it takes to walk from the street. After all, I could pull a hamstring and risk even longer in recovery. You can never be too safe.
