At my place of employment we have what we’ve termed “the free table.” Anything on the table is up for grabs. The table usually displays coupons for “a free drink once you purchase a drink, appetizer, entrée, and dessert for two. Offer only valid the second Wednesday of the month between 10 a.m. and noon.” But sometimes the table boasts actual “goodies” such as pizza and pastries. Yesterday was one such day.
Now, normally, I try to bring my lunch to work and eat healthy (if you call chicken with children’s bite marks in it healthy). This keeps my stomach from growling and demanding things such as chocolate-covered peanut butter pretzels from Trader Joe’s (I keep a bag in my office for emergencies). But I wanted to go out for lunch yesterday and did not bring in anything healthy. Big mistake.
No one wanted to go out with me (other than what I believe to be a pity offer of fast food). I didn’t want to go out by myself, and instead of gnawing off my arm, I opted for some stale crackers I found in the corner of my office. It wasn’t too long before I had moved on to the Trader Joe’s bag. After a considerable sugar high and subsequent crash, an announcement of free pastries was made. By this time, I had no self-control and immediately downed a croissant. Its delicious, buttery flakiness was everything I dreamed it would be. Until I remembered I was in a weight loss challenge with some competitive family members. I am supposed to lose five pounds by Feb. 11. Now that I think about it, I’m betting one of them arranged for the pastries to be delivered to my work.
As a very competitive person myself, I am determined to win this contest. I might have to arrange for their Special K bars to contain “added” ingredients. Or I could exercise some self-control and bring in a back-up lunch every day. I better do both. You can never be too safe.
