You know how when you buy new clothes they always come attached with a plastic baggie with spare buttons? At the time you think your clothes have pretty solid buttons, so you toss the baggie into the neverworld of your junk drawer. At least that’s what I typically do. But my most favorite coat developed a button issue just mere weeks into its wear, and I’m now regretting that decision.
First of all, the coat is made of thick wool that required me to go to the sewing store and act domesticated as I picked out big needles and appropriate thread. I thought that was the hard part, but it turned out buttons are even harder to find. They are little and seem to be able to hide in the tiniest of spaces. And after all that work came the actual sewing of the button. Apparently I have weak fingers that cannot push needles through fabric on their own. If I was truly domesticated I would have known what thimbles are used for. I always wondered. And now I know. Instead I am stuck with about five holes in my thumb and blood stains on my white wool coat. From now on, I will always pick the thimble as my piece in Monopoly. That thing must be indestructible. You can never be too safe.
