Those white lines they paint to guide your path across the street are merely false security. It does not mean a car cannot hit you if you stay within the lines. In fact, those walking man signs are pretty much the same. They may give you a good idea of when to cross, but it’s no guarantee that you will not be flattened by a trash truck.
And what is up with people hanging over the edge of the curb waiting for the light to change? Do they want to be first to get run over? What if they slipped or someone pushed them from behind? They are placing a lot of trust in total strangers. And there’s nothing to say a car can’t jump over the edge of the curb and kill them right there on the sidewalk.
In case you can’t tell, I’ve been walking around downtown today. It’s always an adventure. I pretty much just walk around in a constant state of alertness. Anything could attack from anywhere. But the crosswalks seemed to be my biggest threat. Though I do have to say those in wheelchairs looked to be getting around pretty well. And the cars did stop for them. I’m guessing it would be ridiculously offensive if I got a wheelchair to cruise around in. But you can never be too safe.
