Once again I became too relaxed. I decided to treat myself to a manicure/pedicure today. I brought my book and settled in to the massage chair while I soaked my feet in the super-hot water I so love. It was busy at the nail salon so I had extra time to myself before someone attended to me. After about 15 minutes, I smelled something burning.
This was not enough to distract me from my relaxation until I heard the woman next to me start screaming to get her out of the chair. She was kind of a large woman and required two male nail techs to remove her from her throne. She was carrying on that her chair was broken and suddenly started burning her back. I said I thought I smelled something on fire.
The manager came over and said to unplug the chair. Then they lifted the cover over the massage part of the chair and it was smoldering and all black. The woman was freaking out and saying she could have died. I was thinking this was so much more entertaining than my book. They got her settled into a new chair and she calmed down. But then I was left sitting next to the pseudo electric chair. It could have killed her after all.
I started thinking about how I was sitting with my feet in water while attached to an electric appliance that had just shown itself to be untrustworthy. Maybe I should just get up, re-stocking my feet and get out of this flaming deathtrap while I still had all my hair. But instead my curiosity got the best of me, and I stuck it out. I wanted to see if I could defy death once again.
Everything turned out ok, and I survived long enough to at least write this posting. But who’s to say what will happen the next time I go? The techs all wear masks and yet none of the patrons do. I could be overcome by fumes (from the products or the inevitable fires) and pass out directly into the foot tub. If anyone could manage to drown in five inches of water it would be me. I’m very talented that way. From now on, I think I’m going to bring a fumigating mask and a fire extinguisher with me whenever I get my nails done. You can never be too safe.
