Fear of the Day: packing

I’m leaving for DC tomorrow morning and have yet to begin packing. I know in my head what I want to pack, but I can’t bring myself to actually do it. I think it forces me to actually acknowledge that I’m going on an airplane. And airplanes are bad news for me.

It never fails. There is always an incident. You may recall my mention of the electrical fire on the way back from Greece. I’ve also had the plane ahead of me crash. And then on my honeymoon we had to make an emergency landing. They had to tow the plane to a hangar and jumpstart it. I didn’t care for that because I knew if the engine died again while in the air there would be no way to jumpstart it.

So all these things make me scared to pack. I’m also concerned about what to put in my carry-on and what to put in my checked luggage. It’s a big decision because you have to think about what happens if they lose your luggage. But then you can’t pack your entire 48-piece Sephora eyeshadow set in your carry-on. It’s a weighty choice. I also always think about that miracle on the Hudson flight. Did they get refunds on their ruined luggage? Or was it considered OK because it was eventually returned? Maybe I should wrap everything in waterproof plastic. And spray it with flame-retardant. You can never be too safe.
