I’m sure we’ve all seen the “Caution: Falling Rocks” signs along the highway, but most people probably aren’t on the lookout for boulders to come tumbling down. I think on some level I’ve always been concerned about this possibility, though I’ve never actually encountered this situation. This is not the case for some I-70 drivers.
A stretch of I-70 west of Denver was shut down indefinitely last week after a large boulder decided to claim that path as its own. Imagine chugging along at 80 mph, or 10 mph over whatever the speed limit is there, only to find the road dead ends with a significant chunk of debris. If the impact didn’t kill you (or if the boulder directly fell on your car), I would think the actual shitting of a brick would do you in.
On a similar note, my fourth-grade daughter informed me of what the other kids are calling bras: over-the-shoulder boulder-holders. After registering my shock, I informed her that while funny it was also crude. I don’t think she was dismayed. But was even worse for me was that apparently everyone else has already heard this term, and I’m once again the last to know.
I guess my biggest fear would be the combination of these two phenomena. The inevitable falling of the “boulders.” It’s going to happen one day. I’ve seen older women at the beach, and it’s not pretty. I think they should wear signs indicating “Caution: Falling Rocks.” That way we’re all prepared for what we are about to witness. You can never be too safe.
