Fear of the Day: Kansas

Yes, I’m afraid of the whole state. I felt like I was never going to get out of it. It keeps going and going and going, kind of like an Energizer battery. And the worst part is that they make you pay to drive through it. I think they must know that people really want to get to Colorado and would be willing to do anything to get out of Kansas.

Driving through Kansas truly is the road to Abilene. No one actually wants to go and really has no clue how they ended up there. But there I was with the two kids doing a 12- to 14-hour (I’m not good at counting) road trip all by myself. My previous no-eating-in-the-car rule went out the window within the first 10 minutes of the trip. And instead of the new-car smell, I now have McDonald’s French fries wafting in the air. This is not good for someone who is supposed to be watching what she eats.

Kansas also caused me hearing damage. The monotony of it forced me to play the song “Gives You Hell” over and over at full volume in order to stay awake. The kids now know the lyrics by heart, and this is probably also another reason why I won’t be named Mother of the Year. At least I didn’t have to hear the Kansas fight song though.

I do have to say the best part of Kansas is when they choked in the NCAA tourney over the weekend. And if my travels had anything to do with it, I guess I’ll be driving through Kansas every March. You can never be too safe.
