Let me apologize to all you bike enthusiasts before I begin. Now I will say what’s on my mind: bikes are dangerous! My daughter is riding her bike right now, and I’m about to have a heart attack. She is not the most focused child, and it’s clear to me that she is not thinking of all the possible calamities that could befall her.
For instance, the front wheel of the bike could gradually loosen and suddenly go flying off as she’s riding along. Then she would either go face-first into the sidewalk, dislodging all of her teeth and forcing her to wear dentures for the rest of her life, or to go careening out of control and landing in the street where she would then be run over by a teenager who was texting and not paying attention to the road.
Another possibility is that she could be riding along minding her own business when an elderly driver has a heart attack and goes off the road onto the sidewalk and hits her. Then she would fly onto the hood of the car and be forced to hang on for dear life until the driver regains control of his cholesterol. And she doesn’t have strong arms.
I don’t think she is thinking about any of this. It’s almost as if she’s not my child at all. I tell them again and again of all the ways they could die, but they keep on doing stupid stuff. I think I’m going to have to teach her a lesson the hard way: I’m going to start eating hamburger after hamburger in order to work my way to a heart attack. Then I’ll drive around looking for children on bikes. Then maybe she’ll get the point. You can never be too safe.
