A glimpse into my mind…

Most mothers entertain certain fears about the possible dangers their children may encounter. They probably include such things as riding a bike without a helmet, not wearing a seatbelt, running with scissors, and other mundane concerns. Those are the bottom of the barrel for me. I turn anything into a full-blown, pull-out-the-life-vests-and-eject-your-seat meltdown. Just so I state this upfront, my No. 1 fear (similar to Colbert’s Threatdown) is beach holes. You’ve probably never heard of this phenomenon that kills more people each year than do sharks. Don’t worry–I will inform you of the danger. They can be found anywhere sand occurs. (Here’s a link that includes a New England Journal of Medicine study on the problem: http://www.webmd.com/news/20070620/digging-holes-in-sand-can-be-dangerous?ecd=wnl_lbt_062707.)
You can never be too safe.

Yes, I remember you warning us about beach holes before we went on our cruise. If only they were a vortex to an alternate beach universe where you could stay forever and not have to go back to reality… Then, again, I guess if you fall into a beach hole, die, and go to heaven, some would say you would be going to an eternal paradise…hmmm I wonder if they serve Margaritas in heaven?

I am a habitual nailbiter. Sometimes to avoid making a mess, I just chew and swallow my nails. Is there anything I should be worried about?

Well, it turns out swallowing fingernails can cause appendicitis. Do you have a tummy ache? The next time I’d spit instead of swallowing.

Um, a warning of a giant beach hole is on the front page of Yahoo! Check it out: http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/giantcrackinafricawillcreateanewocean
