I debated between this fear of the day and “two-drink maximum,” but really they are both the same thing. I’m having my work “holiday” party this afternoon, and it includes two drink tickets. Now, these people are in daily contact with the other people at my place of business and are well aware of the fact that two drink tickets will not be enough. Therefore, I’ve had to devise my own scheme.
I will arrive early. I will sit at a table near the kitchen with pre-selected tablemates. I will order two glasses of red wine (for some reason that gets me there faster). I will not mingle. By the time everyone else arrives, I should be in a good state of mind. If I’m there long enough, maybe the servers will forget I’ve already had my two drinks.
If I don’t execute this properly, I’m looking at a repeat of last year. I arrived late, which is like getting a “C” boarding pass. There were only middle seats left. I got stuck between the overflowing guy who needed to purchase two seats and the guy who thought I’d be impressed with his knowledge of NASCAR. I spent most of my time sending mental telepathy messages to the only other sane person at the table who then decided he needed to get really involved in a discussion of Simpsons v. Family Guy. He wasn’t so sane after all.
So this year I have it all planned out. You can never be too safe.
