Fear of the Day: stray bullets

In addition to the drunken drivers, fear of stray bullets is another reason why New Year’s is not one of my favorite holidays. You would think fireworks would make enough of a bang to ring in 2010, but there are always those who need to take it one step further. I call these people idiots.
Someone is “accidentally” shot by a bullet from nowhere every year. It never fails. And up until now I thought I would be safe if I wasn’t outside when the clock struck midnight. Unfortunately I just read an article about a guy being struck while sleeping in his bed. Apparently my thoughts of safety while sleeping were totally unfounded.
I also love the part where experts try to calm everyone down with statistics. The chances of being struck with a stray bullet are 1 in 5,849,398 or something. I guess those who are lucky enough to be that one should immediately play the lottery.
As much as I’d love to win the lottery, I’d hate being shot even more. Now I’m going to be forced into investing in bullet-proof pajamas for the whole family (I wonder if they make them for cats?). You can never be too safe.
